Sondra (Pugh) Henkel
By: Jake Henkel
Obituary and Information for my Mom. I'd also like to thank the many people who have reached out to my family and me. I may not respond right now, but I've read everything and it makes me feel better. Thank you.
Sondra Lou Henkel (neƩ Haney-Pugh), of Mendota, passed away with her family by her side on August 18, 2015.
She was born November 3, 1941 in Carmi, Illinois to Wanda and Everett Paul Haney. Early in her life she was adopted by her mother's second husband, William Pugh. She grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and began a family there until her move to rural life in the 1970's. She worked in several fields, including working with the mentally disabled. In 1990 she began her most noble career: In-home daycare provider. In 1991 Sondra became a licensed foster parent and spent the next 22 years helping some of the neediest children, some of which to this day call her Mom or Grandma.
Sondra was a creative and adventurous lady. She turned a room in her house into a craft workshop. She also was a songwriter, a horseback rider, and loved to entertain guests.
Sondra is survived by her sister, Michele, of Coloma, MI, 5 children: Dea (Tommy) Aldridge of Madison, TN, Kory (Bill) Wood of Peru, IL, Ronald (Carol) Karns of Wichita, KS, Ryan Karns of Troy Grove, IL, and Jacob (Rebecca) Henkel of Antioch, IL, 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren. And touched the lives of countless foster children.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, her brother, Charlie Pugh, and a great grandchild.
Visitation will be on Saturday, August 22nd from 9:30-11:30 am at Merritt Funeral Home in Mendota, IL. 800 Monroe St. Funeral will begin at 11:30 am.
